Beyond Desktop BIM: Unleashing the Information
Russ Sanders presenting

Why Change? Now more than ever efficiency & flexibility, interoperability, competition for fewer available projects, collaboration is expected…

Russ presented three main topics: (1) "The rest of the data"… it's not just BIM; (2) Collaboration in early conceptual design; and (3) Desktop Design - some "groundbreaking news"

"The rest of the data"
There are 3 different types of data in AE projects:
1 project planning data
2 building detailed data
3 other stuff

For project planning and firm management, Orcutt Winslow has designed and developed their own digital database solution called Virtual Project. This appears to be a very robust solution and available to other firms--see more here:

This business model of software development and solutions to illustrates an expanded service which OWP is gaining early insight and experience. Another expanded service from OWP is the dual use of their rendering farm internally as well as a subscription based service externally. See more here:

For conceptual collaborative design, Russ presented ONUMA OPS as one of their integrated solutions. One of the valuable potentials presented was project "banking" for future review, easy comparison, and reuse of archived project data and metrics--a rich archive for data-mining. Russ also presented OWPs experience with SOLIBRI for model review and interrogation.

Russ also took a few moments to discuss energy analysis tools as valuable project services from a BIM process but also cautioned that the industry is currently at a point where energy analysis is not transparently reliable or understandable without an engineer or expert involved. Though, software and industry maturation is occurring quickly for better energy analysis.

Finally, as a much appreciated and challenging demo, Russ showed the new TeamWork 2 solution that ArchiCAD 13 has provided recently. Russ showed how a model could be manipulated across internet connections with larger models with relative ease. This collaborative potential could truly change how teams are able to work together distantly.
